Product photos that sell: a practical guide for small shops

Online, your photos do the job a customer's hands would do in a shop. Good product images do not need expensive kit, just a simple method you repeat for every item.

Why photos matter so much

A customer cannot pick up your product, turn it over or feel its weight. Photos are how they judge size, colour, finish and quality. Clear, honest images build trust and reduce the questions and returns that come from items not looking as expected.

Set up a simple home studio

Use a plain background

A plain white or light grey background keeps attention on the product and makes your shop look tidy. A large sheet of card curved from the wall down onto a table gives a seamless backdrop with no visible corner. For bigger items, a plain wall and floor work too.

Use daylight

Soft daylight from a window is the best free light you have. Place your table beside a window, not facing it, and avoid direct sun, which causes harsh shadows. On bright days, a thin white curtain softens the light. A sheet of white card on the opposite side bounces light back and fills in shadows.

Keep the camera steady

A modern phone is enough for most small shops. Use a small tripod or rest the phone on something solid, so every photo is sharp and taken from the same height. Clean the lens before you start.

What to photograph

Several angles

Show the product the way a customer would look at it in person. For most items that means:

  • A straight front view as the main image.
  • Side and back views.
  • A close-up of texture, stitching, finish or materials.
  • Any labels, sizes or details a buyer would want to check.

Show the scale

Size is one of the commonest reasons for disappointment. Include a photo with the item in a hand, on a person or next to a familiar object, and state the dimensions in the description.

Show it in use

Lifestyle images, such as a mug on a kitchen table or a scarf being worn, help customers imagine owning the product. Use them alongside, not instead of, clean product shots.

Keep everything consistent

A shop looks more professional when its images match. Decide on a few rules and stick to them:

  1. Same shape: crop every main image to the same proportions, for example square.
  2. Same size: export images at consistent pixel dimensions, large enough for zooming but not huge files.
  3. Same background and lighting for every main image.
  4. Same position: centre the product with similar space around it.

Compress images before uploading, so pages load quickly on phones. Name files descriptively, such as oak-chopping-board-large.jpg rather than a camera number.

Write descriptive alt text

Alt text describes the image for people using screen readers and helps search engines understand your pictures. Describe what is shown in plain words, for example "Large oak chopping board with rounded handle, side view". Avoid stuffing it with keywords. Every product image should have its own alt text.

Using AI for model and lifestyle photos

Model and lifestyle shoots are where costs rise quickly for small shops. Our optional Studio add-on lets you create AI product photos in model or lifestyle settings from your own product images, plus short clips of 5 or 10 seconds for social media and product pages. Studio costs €29 a month and includes 100 credits, with each photo using 2 credits. Always start with a clear, honest product photo, and check every result shows your product accurately.

Bring it together

Set up once, then photograph in batches: all front views, then all side views, then close-ups. You will work faster and your images will match. When your photos are ready, the rest of your listing matters too, so read our guide on what a webshop costs to plan the wider setup, and see the features that come with our hosting.

Frequently asked

Do I need a proper camera for product photos?

No. A modern phone on a tripod, good daylight and a plain background are enough for most small shops.

How many photos should each product have?

Enough to answer a buyer's questions: a clean main image, other angles, a close-up of detail and something that shows the scale.

What is alt text and why does it matter?

Alt text is a short written description of an image. It helps people using screen readers and helps search engines understand your product photos.
